Art Program Overview
Creative Learning for Ages 3 to Adults
At Sounds N Shapes, our art program provides a supportive and inspiring creative space where students can explore, express themselves, and build confidence through visual art. Each level is thoughtfully designed to support students at their own pace, using age-appropriate themes, materials, and techniques in a safe and encouraging environment.
Pathways Through Our Art Program
Students may progress naturally from Foundational → Intermediate → Advanced, or enter directly into Competition & HSC Preparation based on experience and individual goals.
Level 1:
Foundational Art
Beginners / Early Learners
3-7 Years Old

Complete one artwork per class (1 hour per session).

This level introduces students to basic art skills and creative processes while helping them feel comfortable in an art classroom setting. Lessons are delivered through engaging themes and hands-on activities that support early artistic development and general learning skills.

Students will:
Develop fine motor skills using paintbrushes, markers, oil pastels, and basic tools
Learn basic colour recognition and introductory colour theory
Explore mixed media and sensory materials
Express creativity and imagination with confidence
Follow simple steps and instructions
Learn basic art techniques and Elements of Art
Build sensory awareness, focus, and self-confidence

At this stage, students often blend imagination with real-life ideas as they develop their understanding of the world. They enjoy exploring visual details, storytelling through images, and expressing ideas freely through art.
Level 2:
Intermediate Art
Intermediate / Junior Artists
7-12 Years Old

Complete one artwork over one to two classes (1 hour per session).

This level builds and strengthens core art skills while encouraging deeper creative exploration. Students experiment with a wider range of materials, techniques, and ideas, developing confidence and beginning to discover their personal artistic style.

Students will:
Strengthen cognitive and creative thinking skills
Develop creative line drawing and shape construction
Explore forms, patterns, and composition
Practise observational drawing (everyday objects, still life, nature)
Learn colour mixing, light and shadow, and texture
Experiment with mark-making and mixed materials
Explore emotions, mood, and storytelling through art
Understand basic layout, balance, and composition

Students are encouraged to express individuality, develop confidence in their ideas, and create more thoughtful, refined artworks that reflect their own creative voice.
Level 3:
Advanced Art
Advanced & Senior Artists
12 Years Old - Adults

Artwork developed across multiple sessions, depending on complexity (1 hour per session).

This level supports students who wish to refine their technical skills, explore complex concepts, and develop a strong personal style. Lessons encourage critical thinking, creative risk-taking, and deeper engagement with artistic processes.

Students will:
Refine drawing, painting, and mixed-media techniques
Explore advanced composition, perspective, and proportion
Develop conceptual thinking and thematic artworks
Experiment with a range of materials and contemporary techniques
Strengthen visual storytelling and artistic intention
Build resilience through critique, reflection, and refinement
Level 4:
Art Competition,
Portfolio &
HSC Preparation

Upper primary, secondary, and senior students preparing for school assessments, selective programs, art competitions, exhibitions, or HSC Visual Arts.

Projects developed across multiple sessions with structured planning, refinement, and feedback (1 hour per session).

This level provides targeted, high-level support for students working toward specific outcomes such as competitions, school-based assessments, portfolios, and HSC Visual Arts Body of Work. Students are guided through the creative process from concept development to final resolution, with an emphasis on originality, technical skill, and critical thinking.

Students will:
Develop strong conceptual ideas and artistic intent
Plan and refine artworks using the visual design process
Build and document a cohesive Body of Work (HSC-focused students)
Strengthen technical skills across chosen mediums
Learn how to respond to briefs, themes, and competition criteria
Practise visual analysis, artist statements, and reflective writing
Receive constructive, personalised feedback and mentoring

Conceptual frameworks and practice-based learning
Artist research and critical interpretation
Time management, documentation, and refinement strategies
Support aligned with NSW Visual Arts syllabus expectations

Students are supported in preparing works for local, state, and national art competitions, school exhibitions, and showcases. Emphasis is placed on creative risk-taking, originality, and presentation quality.
